This site is for local people

No don't run off, it's not really.  I just got thinking about whether it would be possible to do what some Californians (natch) are trying to do.  Locavores is trying to launch a campaign where one only eats locally produced food, in this case within 100m of San Francisco for a month.

In theory it would be possible to do in London, what with Kent (the garden of England) on our doorstep, nowhere in the UK being more than 60m from the sea and abundant cattle farms this shouldn't pose a problem.  However, the chances of actually sourcing the stuff would be a nightmare.  I don't think the farmers market concept is well enough developed to give you easy regular access.  I suppose the closest one could get to this would be to shop regularly at Waitrose and make sure you only bought from their Leckford Estate range, which at 70 odd miles from my door means I would pass the Locavores test.

I think you are wrong here - there are plenty of local veg box schemes to join - some may not be totaly 'local' but at least the produce is being grown/produced in the UK rather than be shipped half way round the world.

Andrew
Fair point, I did forget about the boxes. I use one of those boxes myself - Abel & Cole. However, as even the A&C website concedes (as do you in your post) produce is not always local but they do their best to make it as local as possible. My point was whether you could do this for an entire month. I suppose I should put my stomach where my mouth is and give it a go.

where are you located? on 173 drury lane i pointed out that across from fresh and wild in stoke newington london is a farmers market with all product sourced within 100 miles, and all organic.

Thanks for the heads-up I was unaware of that farmers market.

The more I think about this challenge the more I'm convinced it could be done with some hard work in London. At the moment I'm not sure I've got the impetus to do it.
